Salt & Pepper Shrimp
Salt & Pepper Shrimp (椒盐虾) is a crowd pleaser especially among younger folks! It’s a great appetizer to share and is so addicting to eat! When you order it at restaurants these days, it’s over $10 and it’s like half a pound. But, if you make it at home, it’ll cost roughly $7 for a whole pound!
PREP TIME: 5 mins
COOK TIME: 10 mins
SERVES: 2-3 people
Ingredients:
1 lb shrimp
1:1 ratio cornstarch & potato starch
1 jalapeño (sliced)
half a bulb of garlic (minced)
oil
salt, white pepper, sugar
Directions:
Rinse the shrimp with cold salt water
You can trim off the sharp edges and claws and devein the shrimp. It’s all up to you if you want to do this step.
Coat the shrimp in your cornstach & potato starch mixture. Season the mixture with a hint of salt and white pepper
You don’t need too much oil to fry the shrimp, just enough to cover half the shrimp.
To see if your oil is hot enough, use the wooden chopstick method! If the oil bubbles when you stick the chopstick, it is ready!
Fry your shrimp on each side for about 2-3mins or until it has the golden orange color and put aside
In a clean pot, saute your jalapeño and garlic , add back in your shrimp, and season with salt, white pepper, and sugar.
You may want to adjust the jalapeño amount if you can’t handle spicy
