How to Make Wontons at Home
What are wontons?
Wontons is a type of Chinese dumplings filled with a mixture of meat and veggies. If you make it at home, you have control of what filling to put inside! I personally think it taste a lot better than the ones you get at restaurants because you know the freshness of the ingredients going in. Once you make them from scratch, it’s hard to not make them again!
Best wonton wrapper?
I love the New Hong Kong Noodle Co. I like their medium thickness one, it doesn’t break easily and it’s very soft and light when cooked.
Should I make a large batch at once?
Yes, I suggest making a large batch and freezing them. This comes in so handy when you’re lazy to cook.
Pork & Shrimp Wontons
One variation of
wonton fillings:
Pork & Shrimp is a classic combination which taste so good! Again you can substitute the protein for anything really including tofu.
Pictured here are all the sauces and seasonings you’ll need for this recipe, which can be used for any wonton or dumpling filling.
PREP: 60-90 minutes (it’s the folding that takes a while)
COOK: 10 minutes
SERVES: 40-50 wontons
Wonton soup can be easily made in under 20 minutes!! I love keeping it simple with a chicken broth cooked with whites of green onions, ginger, garlic, and fish sauce!
TIPS//
Cook wontons and veggies in a separate pot of water, never in the broth because of the starches and flavoring of the vegetables. This ensures your broth stays clean
Ingredients:
1/2 lb pork
1/2 lb shrimp
3 large shittake mushrooms (diced)
3-4 scallions (diced)
2 tbsp Soy Sauce
1 tbsp Minced Garlic
1 tbsp Oyster Sauce
1 tsp ginger
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp Shaoxing wine
1/2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp white pepper
Directions:
Combine all the ingredients listed above and mix together
Optional- you can cook some of the filling to ensure it’s seasoned to your liking before folding the wontons
Put a small amount of filling in the middle of the wontons and fold binding it with water. The more you put, the harder it will the fold. So the less is better for this!!
Cook the wontons in a separate pot of water and when the wontons float up, it’s ready. It’s about 4-5 minutes.
Freeze the rest of the batch. When you want to cook it, it’ll take about 7-10 minutes.
